Since my 2004 posting, I have learned a little more about my Eley line, thanks mainly to the wonderful Bruce Saunders. Here are my "facts": My ggg grandmother is CAVANDA ANN "KITTY" ELEY (b. 1828-29 IOW - d. ??). On Feb 10, 1848, Cavanda married Thomas Gray. According to IOW guardianship records, Cavanda Ann Eley and her brother Lemuel Eley (b. abt 1832 - d. aft. 1897) are the "orphans" of Robert Eley. My mystery has been figuring out who is this Robert Eley. For the longest time, I operated under the ill-advised theory that there was only one Robert Eley in IOW in the 1820s-30s. Silly me. I was basing this conclusion primarily on the census reports, there being one "Robert Eley" household in 1830 IOW census report and one "Robert L. Eley" household in the 1840 IOW census report. Bruce set me straight on this by sharing with me the ancestry of Robert L(Lankford) Eley (b. 1817- d. abt 1845). It is now clear that I do not descend from Robert L. Eley (son of Benjamin Eley and Patsey Lankford; grandson of Robert Eley and Jemima Johnson). So, who is MY Robert Eley? Alas, it is still a mystery to me. The 1830 IOW census report shows the household of "Robert Eley" to include one girl under the age of 5 (Cavanda, b. 1828-29). The IOW marriage records for the early 1800s reveal two marriages for "Robert Eley" (Sally Darden, 1826, and Polly Stephens, 1833) and one for Robert L. Eley. Is the Robert Eley who married Sally Darden and Polly Stephens mine? I suspect so, but so far cannot adequately prove this. Before I forget, the earliest guardianship records for Cavanda and Lemuel that I've been able to locate are 1837, indicating my Robert died in the mid-1830s. To my knowledge, he did not leave a will. I've gone through numerous IOW guardianship records, wills, and the like, looking for all Robert Eleys. Based on these records, Can you (or anyone) can provide any additional that might help me prove or disprove a John B. Eley - Robert Eley connection? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! I am now wondering if my Robert Eley descends from John B. Eley (b. 1775-1780 and d. 1823-1825) and Dorothy (maiden name unknown). According to my notes, John and Dorothy had the following kids: Robert (b. 1794-1804), Samuel, Elbert, John, Exum. So are these the parents of my Robert Eley?
