I have not run into any Barley's but would be interested to see where the name came from, if not the product Barley.
The Rainey family of Greensville County lived in Barley. I have [postcards from the 1800's mailed from and to Rainey family members at Barley.)
The Isaac Rainey house is still there on Brink Road. There is a road named Rainey Pond Road right near the NC/VA line. The Barley Post office still stands right at the intersection of Brink Road and Beef Road. Perhaps they would know.
Virginia "Vergie" Belle Rainey was my grandmother. She married John Fletcher Vincent from Old Gaston (Vultare) right over the NC/VA line. They are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery across from the church.
