I have an abstract of a court record that shows a Holern Britt, wife of Johnston Britt, agreeing to relinquish her dower of 150 acres in Greensville County, Nov 1800. I know that her husband Johnston was living at this date. Could someone familiar with early Virginia law please tell me if dower rights were already in place before a woman was widowed or could this be her dower from a previous marriage? Thank you.
