Posted by Nancy Holmes Simpson I am researching a Butler line most probably descended from a Joseph Butler of Dinwiddie Cty. I found some data indicating a Joseph Butler emigrated there and received lands in 1758. However, I have a lot of data for son of interest John Butler b. in either 1757 or 1761 (depending on the source, which are military and pension records). That would make him a little late for the date of your couple's marriage, though first wife dying was not uncommon. John was reportedly enlisted in the VA Continental line in 1780 from Dinwiddie. my John had sons Joseph, Anthony Griffin (from whom I descend) and John. He was married to Elizabeth Griffin. Any of this familiar to you?
