When Austin Charity was married in Charles City in 1862 his marriage license indicated that he was a widower so the likelihood is that Isabella was a first wife. There is no record of his first marriage in Charles City records. It is my guess that he was married in Richmond. His Charles City Free Negro registration was obtained on 16 AUG 1849 at age 19, apparently in preparation for his move to Richmond where he registered on 03 SEP 1849 (#1328). If he was married at the time of his move it seems likely his wife would have gotten her certificate at the same time. I know that Austin registered 3 more times in Richmond -- 1852 (#1543), 1857 (#2077) and 1860 (#2368). To find Isabella I would recommend checking the Henrico County/City of Richmond Marriage Register, the Death Register (for Isabella Charity) and the Free Negro Register. I suspect you should find her and her maiden name in at least one of those places. I hope this information is helpful to you.
