Mary Thomas, was the unmarried mother of Miles Thomas and another child named William H. Thomas who died in 1854. Mary was the daughter of Barrett/Barnett Thomas who is the elderly man in her household in the 1860 census. Barrett was the son of a William Thomas, who (in turn) was the son of a William Thomas. The first William Thomas was a mulatto who served two terms of enlistment in the Revolutionary War on the Continental line. During his second tour of enlistment he was a personal servant to General Peter Muhlenburg, who commanded forces on the Penninsula up until the British surrender at Yorktown. A very sad chapter in Mary's life is documented in the chancery case Samuel Ladd v. Mary Thomas, 1860-0060/cc. Barrett Thomas was an alcoholic who drove his daughter Mary to live in the woods with her children, causing the death of William from exposure. If you are a descendant of Miles Thomas I would like to get you to join our register of Charles City Revolutionary War descendants as we are planning a special event for the 225th Anniversary of the surrender at Yorktown (in 2006). We hope to highlight the significant number of men of color who served in the REvolutionary War and the number of their descendants who continue to live in the county today.
