Posted by Jane Hubbard A skirmish took place near Westover which made him fear that the wagon train would not get to Deep Bottom safely. He parked the wagons at Wilcox Wharf. Meanwhile Fitzhugh Lee's Cavalry, Wade Hampton's Division, attacked Gregg's Cavalry, Division of Sheridan's Command at a point between Samaria Church(interesection of Routes 609 and 603) and Nance's shop (near the Radio Tower intersection of Routes 603 and 609). This is known as the Battle of Nance's Shop. The Union forces were routed and pursed to within two and one half miles of the Court House. There were many wounded on both sides. My Granddmother was Louisa Warren Nance who married James Nimmo Hubbard. Her family lived in a small house near the court yard. I believe it is now houses the Historical Center.

There is information on this in A History and Pictorial Review of Charles City County Va. General Philip Sheridan was ordered by General George Meade to escort 900 wagons with calvalry divisions from an army base at the White House (New kent County) to a pantoon bridge at Deep Bottom (on the James River in Henrico Co). On June of 1864, he crossed the Chickahominy River over the bridge near Providence Forge and preceeded towards Charles City Court House.
