Between 1783 and 1785, approximately 1200 Black Loyalists left America for Nova Scotia. That number expanded to approximately 3500 with 15 settlements through out Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and New Brunswick. After some harsh winters and poor treatment about 1190 men, women and children left and went to Sierra Leone. By 1815, another 3,000 US blacks, refugees from the War of 1812 arrived.
The largest early settlement was in Birchtown, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia ( Atlantic coast just southwest of Shelburne). There is a small museum there with some resources. I found several Charles City County people listed in their journals. Some other names were Allen, Ashe, Atkinson, Brown,Cain, farmer, Jackson, King, Langley, Smith, Scot(t) from cc, Tynes, Williams. There were many more.
