Posted by Sam Y. Perkins Hopkins was made a major general in the War of 1812, but is there EVIDENCE that he was a major general in 1795 some 17 years prior to 1812? Thank you for any info on this subject. Sam Y. Perkins

In a letter to George Washington from a committee of Brunswick citizens who were protesting the signing of the "Treaty of Amity" by Washington and the British in 1795, reference was made to " Major General Hopkins" as being one of the committee. In fact Hopkins wrote a letter to Washington reffering to the committee. In a query to the Library of Congress about the term "Major General" for Hopkins I was told that Hopkins was made a major general by the Brunswick "militia".
