Brunswick Countian Godfrey Brown manumitted (by deed) 13 slaves in 1822. As far as I can tell, Godfrey was a black man freed by John Bowdoin in 1814 (I cannot find any information on a white Godfrey Brown in Brunswick). Supporting this conclusion is the information in the 1820 Census of free blacks in Brunswick, as the number of slaves in Brown's household, their gender, and ages match the background traits of the slaves Brown freed (see the data in Francis Wynne, Register of Free Negroes, p. 194).
