Connie,
I found your query recently regarding John/William Chapman of Brunswick. I think we may be looking for the same person. By now, you've likely learned more about them, but here's what my research suggests. Please forward any info. you have.
William Chapman's will, dated 1801 (if I remember correctly), is located in Warren Co. It lists four children: John H., William, Martha & Elizabeth (I'm going on memory here, but can look in my records.) I believe my anscestor to be John H., but it may be William or it may be none of the above as I have no definitive link.
William Chapman's father was named John Chapman who married Rebecca. He was an attorney. He died in 1745. His will lists 3 children: Benjamin, William & Mary. Rebecca remarried John Wall, apparently a prominant landowner, soon after. I had not known William's birthdate, Rebecca's maiden name nor Martha's name. Thank you!
According to my information, John Chapman (d. 1745) was born in Surry Co., Va. His father was Benjamin Chapman (d.b. 19 Oct 1720 in Surry) of Isle of Wight and his mother was Mary Unknown. Benjamin's father was Charles Chapman (d.a. 10 Dec. 1710 in IofW) of Isle of Wight who married Ann Bland, daughter or Thomas Bland and Mary Unknown.
I have noticed there are several Benjamin Chapman's in the vicinity on early census records. Also, I've seen William's brother, Benjamin on a number of deeds and legal docs in Brunswick.
My ancestor was named Robert Chapman (b. 1800) and lived largely in Warren Co., NC. A direct link to these Chapman's would be a dream. Also, I have reason to suspect that my Robert was not lilly white, but likely had a significant amount of Native American ancestry. Do you know anything about these Chapman's to suggest that one of them might have married or coupled with a non-European? Could Martha Williamson have been NA. I know that Brunswick was the home of Fort Christiana and still is home to a number of Saponi Indian descendents, but this tells me little.
Thank you so much for the info. you've already posted. Anything futher would be much appreciated.
