Posted by Sharlotte Neely Donnelly Does Joseph E. Neely appear in the 1870 census (at age 7 or 8) in Brunswick County, VA, Warren County, NC, Halifax County, NC, or nearby? What about the 1880 census (at age 17 or 18). What about any other records? By around 1886 or 1887, he was living in Horry County, SC (near the border with North Carolina) married to Sharlotte Ada Sarvis (born 1853), a native of Horry County, SC. He appears, for the first and only time I am aware, on a census in 1900 in Horry County, SC living with his wife and three surviving children near his wife’s Sarvis relatives. For a long time I was convinced I would find him among the other Neelys of Horry County, SC and/or neighboring Columbus County, NC. I now think he moved as an adult to Horry County, SC from somewhere else, probably along the North Carolina/Virginia line, maybe a Saponi community. Joseph E. Neely is the father of my paternal grandfather, Joseph Bowden Neely, Sr. (1888-1928), who married Nettie Donnie King (1892-1958) from the Dillon County, SC/Robeson County, NC area. They moved to Savannah, Chatham County, GA where my grandfather owned an Indian Motorcycle Company until his early death in 1928. All their children and grandchildren were born in Savannah. Any information, ideas, leads, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sharlotte Neely Donnelly donnelly@one.net or neelys@nku.edu

My great-grandfather was Joseph E. Neely, born in North Carolina in September of 1862. His father was born in Virginia and his mother in North Carolina. I think they may have been from the Saponi area and may have been Indians. I have a photo of him on my genealogy page at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/o/n/Sharlotte--N-Donnelly. Sometimes “Neely” was spelled “Neeley,” “Nealy,” “Neily,” and a variety of other ways.
