it is a matter of record,on file in amelia co,court house. peter was charged with intermarriage,by the county and two of his sons. peter took out a peace bond again,his sons, and the charges again him was abated,shortly there after. the resolution is not listed. the woman he married may have not been a negro,as there was quite a few indians that were indentured slaves,also at that time,in amelia co,va. also it is not absolutely positive,that said peter coleman,was the son of william coleman sr,and faith godfrey. because the colemans like many other white large land,owners in amelia,had large numbers of black slaves,in 1860 the colemans had about 50 black slaves,and they all took the coleman name. in 1860 amelia had about 2700 whites and nearly 7,000 negro slaves. what a mess,all over people that was to lazy,to plow and hoe their own crops.
