Co2 set ups

Can someone give me some info on co2 set ups please. I have up until now used a compressor but have managed to get 2 to malfunction over the last wee while and wondered if i should replace them or if i should try a co2 set up. If i change do i need any different equipment or is it as simple as go to my local brew supplier and getting a tank, if so what size tank do most use and how long would one last for.
