Where in the world are you? The weather should be included in your decisons too.
I'm in the UK and the weather is a big factor, when I'm booked for outside events, I always say that if it is pelting down with rain, I won't attend as people won't take their clothes off! Organisers are very understanding. However, always check the weather forcast and have a positive attitude as it often clears up!
If you are planning to do big festvals, don't be afraid to ask if they have 'Face Painter / Craft' rates. Often, they will have a price for traders and a price for Face Painters. I just did a big festival at the weekend and paid 1/3 of the traders pitch price.
Don't forget that Christmas Fayre / Fetes are good to do too.
ABA do a great starter pack with everything you need and it is a very reasonable price. You can pick your own stencils, or let them do it for you. Either way - you'll get a good deal.
Good Luck
