Hi Jen.
Here in Australia we have fine steel wool pads with soap already in them, this is what I use and it leaves no residue on the needles. Not sure why you shold not polish with steel wool,,, maybe as some are courser than others.
When I pull a dual action apart and or repair I use a 3-in-1 spray silicone spray. it is a silicone and a lubricant and have had no troubles what ever.
