When I was a teenager a neighbor of mine, a decorated World War II vet, had literally a shrine of Webb Pierce in his garage/aka man cave. Ernest Tubb too, but especially Webb Pierce, so I came to be a big fan, I mean that voice could cut thru a on a vinyl record like no other just about. From what I've read, he was a person who was usually sober and looking sharp in public appearances, but hit the bottle hard away from public view. I think Max Powell did whatever Webb needed done whenever he needed it done. Then there was Webb's somewhat iffy practices with songwriters and what songs he'd record if he could get half of it. But, he was a legit superstar, and played the part of a superstar well, and he helped a lot of people out in the business too.
