Well, I can see that no one (at least of those posting here) thinks it's their responsibility to promote their shows, wanting to put it all on the promoter. If a promoter only had to promote, and didn't have other expenses, I'm sure with the door, they could do a bang-up job promoting the events. Unfortunately, from that door they also have to pay rent, insurance, and the wrestlers, as well as other staff working for the show. Unless there's a lot of people coming through that door, it's barely a profitable business. What's the first expense a struggling business usually cuts back on? Advertising. And there you have the problem.
If, on the other hand, fans and wrestlers were helping out with the promoting, and more were coming through the door, then there would be more money to advertise the shows.
It's a vicious cycle, and could explain a lot of reasons the business has changed for the worse. People need to know about the shows or they can't very well be at them. If there's no funds to advertise, then it needs to be word of mouth. And if even the wrestlers themselves don't feel it's their responsibility, then it all comes down to the fans. Which is fine if fans bring out more fans. If it's not happening and new people aren't being exposed to the shows, then the business continues to falter.
