I've been attending wrestling shows in Nashville with varying degrees of consistency since Smokey Mountain closed at the end of 95. It was at one of those shows, early 97, that I first met Trent. I thought, "Who is that wise ass calling Recon by his real name (Barry Buchanan)?" But I digress...From that point until the present, the only time Nashville was anything close to a wrestling hotbed was the best part of Music City's run, and at least for talent if not attendance, the period when Bert Prentice had the WCW development deal. I don't have an informed opinion about TNA's tenure at the Fairgrounds, because for some strange reason I never attended one of those shows. I do know that the Fairgrounds was shot as far as indies drawing there once TNA left town.
Indie wrestling as whole is hurting due to MMA. In Georgia, a promoter can still run an MMA show with no names and draw way better than an indie wrestling show. I believe MMA is here to stay. I think it's past the point where the "human cock fighting" opposition can have much impact. I think pro wrestling can compete successfully, but not without a major infusion of up and coming talent. By in the large, the best athletes are currently going into MMA rather than pro wrestling.
