I was diagnosed with Hyper Prolactima in 2001 and have a microadenoma on my pituitary. I was given several options including surgery but opted for drug therapy to shrink the tumor. I was put on Dostinex in Fall 2001 which has been very successful in shrinking the tumor. I had just given birth in Feb of 2001 and was 50+ pounds overweight after giving birth. I only lost 4 lbs after giving birth and was having terrible symptoms irritability, no periods, hot flashes to the point of needing a shower, couldn't lose baby wieght and terribly depressed. Of course I was told it was the baby blues and given an anti depressant which helped somewhat but the other symptoms were unbearable! Once I was diagnosed and began the meds I did lose about 35 lbs and it took about a year or two to get the correct dosage and to feel somewhat "normal" (I never really feel normal!! My sense of well being just is not there!! Some days I struggle to get out of bed) I wanted you to know that the Endo Dr. that I see has told me that I will never be able to go off of the Dostinex. He said his experience has been that the symptoms and the tumors return and continue to grow larger if they are not treated all the time by the drugs. I also found out about the correlation of the drug and the tumor when they lowered my dosage because of the side effects and my tumor almost tripled in size and my symptoms reappeared.
Have you had a MRI lately to verify the size of your tumor? It sounds like your going off the meds has allowed your tumor to grow and cause weight gain and other symptoms. Has your Dr. ever told you you shouldn't go off of the meds or that your weight gain and migranes might be caused by the growing tumor? I wish you the best with this condition. It is a continual daily mental battle to feel healthy.
