Posted by ScP on 22/5/2007, 10:10 am It started with a highly unpleasant interview with Tony Greig who captained England where he promised to make the West Indies team grovel during the series, featuring racist overtones about the West Indies players being all well and good when things were going well but not having the temperament for a battle with the mentally tougher white England team. That was where the grovelling was going to come in. Obviously England got spanked but what struck me was that the West Indies looked like a team of bona fide sportsman whereas the England team looked like a bunch of old men who wouldn’t know a training regime if it kicked them in their boxed goolies. It reminded me of pictures I’ve seen of the 1982 Great Britain-Australia RL series; the Kangaroos were in a different world when it came to professionalism and somehow just looked the part. Darcus Howe was peddling the line that Viv Richards sticking it to Tony Greig’s England team had given him the inspiration to kick off at Notting Hill. The narrator wasn’t convinced that the riots had anything to do with cricket, and I think I agree.
Did anybody else catch the documentary about the 1976 West Indies cricket tour?
