Tim, you are correct. Those 2 games were hard fought well played games that your team deserved to win. There was great defense by both sides. Runs were at a premium because of that & the good pitching. I know our guys had trouble with Gary Adams. I will never forget the 3 run homer Wes Lord hit in the bottom of the sixth to give you the lead. The outfielder you are referring to was Joe Foley. That might have been one of the 2 or 3 times we got you out as well.We primarily played a 5-man infield, so we has 3 outfielders. Our outfielders were so aggressive that I think someone would have been injured if we played with 4. We had Brad Farrar in left, Joe Foley in center, & a local A player named Kevin Carver in right. Farrar was the ultimate gamer, Foley would give up his body to make catches. In fact, he ran thru an outfield fence in Hutchison Kansas the year before. Carver could run like a cheetah & would sellout to make plays. Our infield had Kevin Birkofer at third, Bobby Cole from VIP at short, Tim London in the middle, Doug Shanyfelt at second, & Steve Dickinson at 1st. We had a young Tommy Thompson catch & a heavyset pitcher named Rust Grubbs, better known as Meatloaf. He threw a nasty knuckleball & could really pitch to our defense. We only had 3 major players because we started the year at A, but were moved up because we won 3 A-AA NIT's in a row to start the season. |
