I like the idea of a middle pitching lane, and if the pitcher is hit in this lane; can be made an out, out for the rest of the game, or tourney, whatever seems best?
Most guys at this level take a lot of bp and can hit around the middle zone? Biggest conversation I have heard over my days is that the easiest place to get a hit is up the middle.
As competitive as softball is, and not really a recreation sport, feel this rule would help the game. MLB took out aggresive slides at home plate out, so I think softball could do the same?
Most players go home to work/families and their loved one's are not thinking that they are going to play with the possibility of DEATH or SERIOUS injury in a hobby, precautions should be implemented.
