This is the type of attitude which is exactly what is wrong with society today and more specifically slow pitch softball. Way too many players think that it is absolutely ok to threaten, personally humiliate and become physical with umpires. From 1977-1982, i was fortunate to umpire the Menís Professional Softball League with co-Hall of Famers Mike Mechanko, Bill Gatti, Rick Weiterman , Cal Carmen and many others. Were there disagreements with umpire calls? Sure there were but the players, while angry, did not engage in the behavior stated above. Yes, umpires are a necessary evil. I invite the players who believe it is ok to continuously berate, threaten, swear at, kick dirt etc. to attempt to umpire. I believe that those of you who think you can umpire better than the conference umpires will be in for a rude awakening if you choose to umpire. We as umpires are expected to be perfect the first game and improve each game thereafter. The umpires that I have worked with since 1968 and those today umpire because they love what they are doing and want to be apart of the game. Just because this is adult softball it doesnít mean that managers, coaches players have the right to treat umpires like many do.
