I never spot famous people, never have. I just do not see them. How many times has the wife said, 'that's such and such from that film/band/TV programme' I then look around and say 'which one do you mean?'.
Yesterday evening I'd just cleared Passport Control at LHR yesterday, desperate for a pee I went the loo, as I was coming out I had a fleeting glimpse of a grey haired man go in. Something registered. 'Nah, can't be, can it?'
I went down the escalator dismissing my obvious error. I got to the bottom, but I couldn't leave it and decided to wait. The man came down, 'no it's not him, just someone who look a little like him' I convinced myself.
'Hang on though, same build and height as me, trade-mark black trousers and black blazer'. He turned to go to the Baggage Area, changed his mind and walked past me.
'Roger?' I enquired(This is going to be embarrasing if its not him). He didn't turn at first, then he did. 'Yes?, sorry I can't stop I'm in a hurry.'
I didn't know what to say. We walked out in to Arrivals together.
Ask something... erm.. anything 'any plans for a new album?'
'Maybe.' came the reponse.
'What a dumb question. Of course he's not going to tell me anything. A complete stranger walks up to you and starts asking you abut your work! What oher response did I expect.! He's a pro, he's fully aware anything he says can be all over the internet within hours.
We were now outside in the Arrivals Hall. 'Well nice to meet you Roger, ddn't ever expect it to happen.'
'Yeah, nice to meet you too' and he was gone.
Everyone knows the saying, 'never meet your heroes, you'll only be disapponted'. Well I was. Not in Roger, but in me. Anyone who knows me will know about my obsessive Roger Waters/Pink Floyd behaviour. (Wife's observation, not mine).
I've bought the albums, bought the concert tickets (12 times) and the accompanying flights, the hotels, train fares, car hire. the tour T-shirts, the tour Programmes, the joints etc, etc. And I've dreamt of such an encounter since I was 14 when I first became a PF fan. I've had a list of questions stored in my brain that would take me hours to discuss with Rog.
After 34 years of wishing, imagining, dreaming and waiting, I blew it!
