Wow. What a terrible week for those who grew up in the 70s. 3 highly talented entertainers passed over to the other side within days of each other, and all 3 will be greatly missed.
Ed McMahon was #1 at being No. 2, and made a very difficult job look incredibly easy. He took constant ribbing from his good friend Johnny Carson, and clearly deserved a gold medal for being such a good sport. His constant guffaws, baritone voice, party hearty vibe, and occasional zingers lobbed at his boss on the definitive version of "The Tonight Show" made him an icon in his own right.
Farrah Fawcett - They don't come better looking than this Angel, and her wild mane, toothy smile, and heavenly body graced millions of walls in the poster that seemingly everyone owned (and, if they didn't should have)! She went on to prove that she was more than a mere sex symbol in roles that displayed a great acting ability. Later, we'd all root for her, as she valiantly, and graciously, fought a hideous evil that, hopefully, someday soon, will be vanquished by medical science. I know that I was, and remain, smitten.
Michael Jackson was beyond gifted, and became the most successful entertainer of all time, and rightfully so. Like all of his fellow humans, he wasn't perfect, and had his share of faults. I prefer to focus on his artistic abilities, and achievements, which were countless. "Thriller," the album, and the video, was him at the peak of his career. Michael recognized, and respected, talent in others, and brought in Vincent Price, John Landis, Eddie Van Halen, and others, and created a pop masterpiece that crossed over into many different genres, bringing together young and old, white and black, displaying his desire to reach out to, and bring together, as many people as anyone could. Of course, I'll always think of him as the little boy who sang like Jackie Wilson, and cavorted like James Brown, and fronted one of the most successful bands ever. His childlike spirit is now free.
