The original Svengoolie, Jerry G. Bishop, had been off the air for nearly 6 years. With a change of ownership at the station, Bishop's masterful, and hilarious, "Screaming Yellow Theater" had been replaced by Cleveland Horror Host The Ghoul. It would be years before Chicagoans would realize just how much Svengoolie, and his offspring, was influenced by Cleveland's Ghoulardi, and local viewers didn't appreciate The Ghoul's manic antics. Of course, Ron "The Ghoul" Sweed didn't exactly endear himself to Chicagoland TV viewers with his false declaration that "Svengoolie is a no-talent rip-off, and we made him leave!" The Ghoul's TV run in Chicago was short-lived, to say the least, and just 4 months later he was gone.
Then came Saturday night, June 16th, 8pm, channel 32, WFLD-TV's "Creature Feature." Chicagoland viewers rejoiced as Rich Koz brought to life The Son Of Svengoolie! Rich had worked with Jerry G. Bishop back in the "Screaming Yellow Theater" days, and proved himself to be more than a worthy successor.
I'm happy to say that I witnessed it all via television, and, after an absence of nearly 9 years, Son Of Sven returned, "all grown up" as just plain Svengoolie, this time at station WCIU where he remains to this day, and hopefully for 30 more years!
