While it *would* be nice to win this award, you're right. I don't really care much about the Rondos, or any other competition, not from a personal standpoint. I've never been one to feel the need to compete with anyone in any way, shape, or form. If I did, I'd have become a professional athlete. The pay would certainly be much better.
Last year, when this was a new category, I was a bit excited to see my genre acknowledged, and did a bit of minor online (never on our shows) campaigning, thrown into the midst of what was most definitely more of an informational/get the word (about the Rondos) out there blitz. Compared to others who did so then, and again this year, I did very little true campaigning, and, by this year, the novelty of being nominated had long since worn off. Having said all of that, Sven, who did mention the Rondos on his program, at the request of WCIU higher ups, is as deserved a winner as there could ever be.
Now, if they were to change the category name to the one you suggested...
