Well, the Rondo Award winners have been
announced, and our good pal (Son Of)
Svengoolie took 1st place in the
"Favorite Horror Host (Active)" category!
(Son Of) Svengoolie is played by Rich
Koz. Rich first became involved with
the proud tradition of Horror Hosting
when, as a teenager, he would send Jerry
G. Bishop, the original Svengoolie, jokes
to use on his show "Screaming Yellow
Theater." Eventually, Jerry G. Bishop
invited Rich to come to his TV tapings,
and a sort of partnership was formed.
In 1973, after Jerry G. Bishop moved on
to other pursuits, he returned to
deejay work (he was a teen heartthrob
disc jockey in Cleveland in the mid-60s,
where he was exposed to Ghoulardi) on
Chicago's WMAQ morning show, and took
Rich Koz with him.
In June of 1979, Rich Koz took to the
TV screen on Chicago's WFLD as The Son
Of Svengoolie. The show lasted until
1986, when WFLD became a FOX affiliate,
the thinking amongst the powers that be
being that the show wasn't dignified
enough for a network station. Whatever.
In 1989, Rich returned to WFLD (FOX),
and hosted a program known as "The Koz
Zone." This program aired through 1993.
By the mid-90s, Rich Koz could be seen
on Chicago's WCIU, channel 26, once
again hosting horror movies, this time
as Svengoolie, no "Son Of," as the local
FOX station claimed to own the rights
to his original moniker, whilst Jerry G.
Bishop owned "Svengoolie," and reckoned
his TV "son" had "grown up."
Rich Koz has won 3, I believe, emmys,
and has even been admitted to the
NATAS/Emmy "Silver Circle" for
"outstanding contributions to Chicago
television."
Rich is a great guy. Nocturna & I
admire his work, and always enjoy
our meetings with him. I cherish our
periodic correspondence, and he never
fails to ask about Young Master Gregory.
Congratulations to you, Sven! You
entirely deserve this award!
