Been looking for my first head gig. I need some advice in two areas:
1. This will be my first foray into (hopefully) interviewing as a head candidate. How should I expect this type of interview to be different? What should I expect and what kinds of materials should I prepare? 2. I don't have a good relationship with my current HD. It's a situation where he does not really want to do the job, and is really just collecting a paycheck and running out the clock. The kids are frustrated and want more (as do I). Obviously I have no interest in expressing that in an interview, but if I am asked about my current situation, is it acceptable to just say something along the lines of "I am ready for a new challenge."?
Thanks in advance

Since you are AD and applying for HD that is all the justification you need for why you’re interested in the job. You could stick to that.

That's the best thing to say.
1. It's the truth,
and,
2. You aren't burning any bridges.

1. Depending on the district it may vary. I as a fad would always ask for a recording or two of the group for which you were responsible. 2. Highlight organizational skills and responsibilities you had in running the program. 3. Demonstrate your desire and commitment to being a team player. 4. Have a plan for how you would further develop the program at the new school.
As to why you would want to move from an assistant position to a head position, that is fairly obvious and your observation regarding a new challenge is spot on. You might also want to address why the new school is a good opportunity for this and how you are a good fit for the position. Also include how your current position has helped prepare you for a head job. In no circumstances mention anything about your feelings of your current head director.
