One of the HS HDs in our district is retiring right after UIL. I will be interviewing for the position next month. This will be my first time interviewing for a head job. I believe I have a great resume and more than enough experience assuming that is what they are actually looking for. But I have two questions: 1. What type of questions can I expect in this interview, that I may not have had in previous interviews as an assistant? Essentially, how is this interview different? 2. What kind of things should I be asking in this interview? Obviously I know the district, but what are some things that I am not thinking of that I should be prepared to ask about?
As I said, I have never gone through this type of interview before and I would like to be as prepared as possible. Thanks in advance.
What's your philosophy of teaching? Expect questions like, how would you utilize your leadership, how would you incorporate cross curriculum (math/science/history) into your curriculum, how will you grow the program, John dear has a basketball game on the same night of a Christmas Concert, how would you handle that? Principal wants to know will you handle the program without getting the Principal involved with parent conferences, and minor things that a HD should take care of. One question I like asking is, do they have an open door policy or do I go directly to their assistant all the time? Google Head Band Director questions and you'll find a lot of good stuff out there.
Just got my first HD job last year. I did 5 interviews for head jobs before I was selected. Expect questions about long-term planning (5 year plan?), more about dealing with parents and community and other staff. Definitely questions about sharing kids with coaches. I would ask what the principal's vision and goals are for the band, to make sure you are in line.
