In some circumstances (probably most) the marching band also has class time to refine their skills and at the high school level, those 100-350 kids have had some training on their instrument for multiple years (middle school bands). In the case of the winter activities, there is often no class time available...thus, they have to completely rely on after school rehearsals...then add in that almost every winter group has students that have never once performed on that chosen piece of equipment (percussion or guard)...so the analogy of being able to accomplish the same thing with the same amount of time and less kids isn't really fair. Winter guard and winter percussion should be held to the same 8 hour limit as marching band. My God, if you can get 100-350 kids to limit it to 8 hours, you sure should be able to get 10-30ish to do so as well. Yes, it's a different monster, and we've made it into a horrible one by making kids rehearse 4-5 hours EVERY weekday plus weekends.
Balance! If you don't have balance, you will have burn out.
Translation you have 8 Hours between Monday 12:01am- End of school Friday. Weekends are the wild west. They don't have the stricter rule we have for marching band.
