Re: Need advice for varsity band and UIL

I have played a lot of the John Edmondson marches with even a HS sub non varsity (5A sub NV). I never do a march that I'm going to have to spend a lot of time on except with the varsity, and even then I tend pick 'style marches' over technique unless there just isn't a lot of technique in the rest of the program. A band playing off of the Grade 2 list should have no question about playing a grade 1 or 1.5 march. |
Without going into a lot of details (it would take to long), I need some advice on picking a march for UIL. This is for a VERY weak 3C varsity band. I'm not looking for titles (I have a pretty health seclection of marches), but rather advice on difficulty. I know it states the march is the "Director's Choice", but would it be "bad form" to pick a march that should be obviously below the level of a vasity band? Something an end of the year beginner band should be able to play? I'm already looking for the easiest grade 2 pieces, but would a simple march with limited range, simple rhythms, and unisons clarinet, trumpet, and low brass parts be a bad idea? The non-varsity band will be doing "Infinity March". Would the varsity band doing a similarly difficult piece be bad in the eyes of the judges?
