I don't spend more than a week on mouthpieces personally while also teaching them very meticulously how to assemble the instruments. (I hate clarinets with that...) That should be more than enough time to have solid tones in my experience. The kids need to be playing as quickly as possible so they keep their excitement there! |
As far as tonguing, clarinets/saxes get told, "Tip of the tongue touches the tip of the reed" and becomes a mantra. With flute it's 'tip of the tongue touches behind the teeth'. As a brass player that one should be the most familiar as flute and brass have more in common many times than they do with woodwinds.
That's my .02 at least. I'm sure there are plenty of other ways/opinions out there!
