As others have said, a 6.5 is a pretty good size for just about any low brass player. Barring some kind of special facial or dental issues that you're having to work around, there's not really anything else you want them on until they go into large bore instruments. |
Trumpet and even potentially horn players tend to have a lot more fluctuation in their mouthpiece needs as they grow, compared to trombone and euphonium players. I wound up using four different sizes of mouthpiece as a trumpet player, and I haven't changed my current size since my sophomore year of high school. In my experience, tuba players tend to change their mouthpieces based on personal preference for what works for them. Some prefer a larger rim, while others prefer a thinner rim.
