I use a half hole on Ds if it is a soft entrance or upward leap. For example, Phantasiestucke. Not a true half hole in the oboe or bassoon sense, but it helps make a smoother, gentler slur. |
I don't use it all of the time.
An 8th grade student of mine was sounding really flat on his altissimo range, and I found out it was because heís being taught Ďhalf holeí fingerings to help the notes speak better. I think it sounds awful, but I donít want to sound ignorant when bringing this up to my private teacher.
Oh, and Iím a clarinet player and never used half hole fingerings in college... so thatís why Iím so dumbfounded.
