Actually, THREE KIDS in a front ensemble setting with either a drumset player, or battery on stands behind the winds would be a much better solution than to have them marching. This would help with pulse, and reduce any phasing issues. They don't have to be "whiz bangers" on mallets to make it happen. They just have to be able to perform with technique and fundamentals, watch the drum major, listen, and be able to read their music. You know, those things that were SUPPOSEDLY taught from grades 6-8? Plus, given the number of percussion kids, and the size of the program, I don't think that Bret Kuhn, or Scott Johnson wrote the percussion book, so the music isn't going to give the kids a heart attack from learning it. Stepping off my soap box now. You tried it, but thanks for playing! (DROPS MIC) |
Do you really think with only 3 kids that they are all whiz bang mallet players? Three kids! Front ensemble! Those phrases donít go together. Better have a PULSE behind the band that allows some stability.
Do you have a front ensemble? If so, put everybody on mallet instruments, and have your marching percussion on stands close to your keyboard percussion for easy switches. You'll get more points as a concert setting, and this also encourages versatility in your percussion section. I've done this this past year, and we were beating larger schools in the percussion caption just by being more musical, and for cleaner execution.
Iíve taken a position at a 3A/1C band program where Iíll be responsible for the drumline (among other things). Our drumline is forecasted to have three members and the HBD and I are teetering back and forth on whether to have the line march or stand still behind the winds. Itís not a state year, but we obviously want to do well at contest this year. With such a small drumline, we wonder if taking the marching aspect away will help them focus on playing clean. Are we crazy for considering this? Have any of you 3A BDs done this before? Any other advice or things to take into consideration?
Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom!
