Sounds very similar to my in the beginning of my career. IMHO, I wouldn't be upset if I got passed over, especially if I had less than 5 years of experience. I can tell you from my own personal experience that it took me about 7 years before I felt comfortable even thinking about going after a HD position. Fortunately, I had a great mentor in the HD I worked with for the 4 years prior to me getting my first HD job. He sat me down and took the time to make sure I knew not only what to do in rehearsal, but how to do all of the paperwork that comes with the HD job: POs, UIL entries, Region Band entries, bus requisitions, etc. By my third year with him, I was doing all of the paperwork for the MS bands; by the 4th year I was doing it without him double checking my work. |
Just remember there is more to the job than what we do in rehearsals...especially for a HD. 7 times out of 10, most young directors aren't ready for the HD gig just yet because they are still learning what to do in rehearsal...only to get crushed by the paperwork. Don't sweat it if you don't get promoted. If you like the school where you are at, and I don't think you would have applied for the HD position if you didn't, then if they hire someone else take the opportunity to learn from them how to do the things a HD has to do.
: Hello YB so here is the situation,
: I am at a fairly small 3A in a very rural
: town. My HD and I have both been here only
: for 1 year. My HD is leaving for many
: different reasons. I have applied for the
: Head job and I am still hoping that I will
: get the top job however it looks like there
: is a chance I will get passed over for a new
: director coming in.
: Again, I am only in my first year here and I
: am relatively young in my career. Is it
: normal to get passed over in this situation?
: If I do get passed over should I be offended
: and take it as not being respected by the
: district and be looking for a new job or is
: this a fairly normal thing in this situation
: and stick it out?
: My head is just reeling in this situation
: and I need some guidance
