A few years ago the band was between 275-290 (CCC school). Our band was larger at that point than the other middle school in the district (i.e. the "better" school). The district didn't like that. Several changes were made to our school and our side of the district to hinder recruitment and retention. This included increasing 6th grade electives from four (band, choir, theatre, art) to 10, while eliminating an elective period (they only get one elective). It also included placing required classes across from band classes, pulling electives from students, and all but eliminating music at the 4th and 5th grade level. None of this happened at the other middle school. In fact, the district has worked hard to avoid those issues on the "other side". The other school's band is at 300+ (probably close to 350+) and has added staff (full and part time). Now, we are at around 180 in the band program, and look to be even lower next year (I've got 100-ish 7th & 8th graders coming back - if they don't get denied their elective, but only 60 beginners signed up). Every attempt we make at recruiting is shot down and there is little to no support for the band. The sad part is that we have gotten better the past few years. Two years of sweepstakes (could have been three, but we had to read the levels one and three this year). Next year, the schedule they have laid out should affectively kill off the band. |
Now, I'm not saying it is a completely deliberate effort to damage the band program, but they certainly aren't helping with their decisions. I've discussed these issues for years with admin, but it falls on deaf ears. I think it is a combination of ignorance and malice.
