There's a fine line to walk here. I never had an issue if a kid asked me to ride something with him/her. When we took trips, I always had the kids in "pods" - a group of 4 or 5 that were always together. The rule was simple...never leave your pod. There were times when one kid wanted to ride something that nobody else wanted to. In those cases, I would ride with them, but the rest of the group sat or stood and observed. |
That was the limit of it, however. I didn't "hang out" with them.
Now that I am retired, I stay connected to the profession by serving as a mentor to young teachers, One thing that I constantly drive home to my clients is that when you're in a high-profile job such as ours, perception truly is reality. I tell them not only "don't do anything stupid", but to not even put yourself in a position where the assumption can be made that you're doing something stupid. Included in that would be getting too "chummy" with the kids. It just takes one rumor, and once it's out there, that doubt never leaves people's minds.
