Have you talked to those PE teachers to see if they can cover? |
There may be 3 teachers on the roster for PE, but if they're doing inclusion PE alongside regular PE, or if there are 100 kids in the class period, they really can't be spared. Legally, in a middle school (sixth grade) setting, they're required to have a teacher for every 45 kids. That ratio must be maintained to less 45:1 student:teacher, and if it exceeds that, the district must have specific plans on file to ensure student safety. It's much easier to simply not pull teachers there.
Additionally, most of the time, your PE teachers are also the folks responsible for lunch duty. Who is doing that duty if they're pulled into a classroom for four to six hours?
If there is flexibility, your PE teachers may be willing to cover for you - and if you approach the principal with a SOLUTION rather than a problem, he'll be more likely to implement it.
Inclusion aides will not be in classrooms during testing - there's testing going on! Have you checked to see if they're available to cover restroom duties?
In short - it's not as cut and dried as we want to think. Admin has to think of the ENTIRE campus, not just our band halls. FIND A SOLUTION and then approach the principal, don't just make suggestions. Find something that WORKS, tell the principal that it WILL work, not a "Maybe it might work, can you check?" and you'll be in better shape.
Also - take this opportunity to educate your principal. Yes, you and your HBD may both be teaching "band" - but would you expect your science teachers to combine a seventh grade and an eighth grade science class just because one of those teachers is out? A reading resource class with a PAP ELA? An Algebra 1 with a Regular Math 8? You have to make sure the Principal knows what you're actually doing. Educating your admin here is how you lay the seeds to protect your job when the next budget cut round happens, since they know that you're not just team-teaching the same kids the same things.
: We have tried to suggest all these
: alternatives. My principal is the kind of
: person who thinks there are 2 directors that
: we can always cover each others classes but
: that doesn't work when we both teach
: separate beginner classes every period.
: We do have aides on campus but since they
: are SpecEd aides they dont like to pull them
: from the kids they cover. But my principal
: can't come up with a good reason for not
: pulling one of the 3 coaches from a PE class
: to cover.

: Regardless of testing, you are entitled to
: minutes of planning time in a two week
: period. If you're not getting that, you
: COULD call TEA and file a formal complaint.
: However, this will well and truly burn the
: bridge at your campus.
: Furthermore, pulling you from class to cover
: restrooms is not necessary. Instead of
: finding fault, find a solution. Tell them
: to hire a sub for the day to watch the
: restrooms. Use an aide to cover the
: bathrooms, since by law a test administrator
: must be a certified teacher.
: Your principal seems to want to find the
: easiest solution, not the one that is
: instruction-neutral. Can you call your HS
: band director and have them come teach your
: class? Can your head director cover your
: classes adequately?
: Again - can you come up with SOLUTIONS and
: OPTIONS rather than just "I don't want
: to do it?"

: Im at the end of my wits with this.
: I am asked to cover by my administration
: constantly. I've more than doubled the
: number of times that I was pulled last year
: and it only getting worse.
: Got the news yesterday that I will be pulled
: not only from my conference but from class
: time for 6 days in late February/early March
: to play potty patrol for testing.
: When asked for any alternative was told
: there absolutely is none by my principal and
: that I basically had no choice.
: I love my team, and I feel very supported by
: my head director and the other arts teachers
: at my campus as well as those at the HS we
: But what else can I possibly do if this
: principal doesn't leave?
