NV director here. No UIL for me either(although I wish I could) |
Here's what I do in the Spring:
- Solo/Ensemble, pick doable but a little challenging solo/ensemble for each kid, but make it fun/cool sounding. They do that contest in February.
- Sandy Lake in Springtime. They always like that and it's a no pressure contest for us as directors(although the students don't know that and get locked in focused getting ready for that which is cool)
- Spring Concert Music: I pick at least UIL PML piece(sometimes 2) and play it at the concert and try my best to get it at a Div. 1 level for the concert. For the other pieces I will pick fun music that challenges them, sometimes even let them vote for which certain pieces they like to play.
It's not a lot but there's only so much time in the semester. Would do more with them(pep rallies, use them for recruiting, etc) if I was allowed.
: what DO you do for the semester.
: Got a second year group at JH - all 7th
: grade (second year players) because 8th are
: with HS. Not giving up on UIL contest yet,
: but I'm not sure it's best for this group.
: What would we do? Need something to both
: push their skill level and make band
: "fun" so they don't drop next
: We had great success last semester with JH
: pep rallies.
