At the end of my 5th & 6th year I tried to change professions!! |
God had other plans for me...Will retire this year with 34 years. You may just need to work through this - try to find some "me" time!
ALL kids in today's world need to be held accountable.
I insist that every marching tune, concert selection, solo, ensemble, etc., be passed-off by a deadline.
Is it 'extra' work for me, sure.
Be reasonable about time and the actual 'cuts' for your selections.
Stick with what you publish as the deadlines and communicate with your parents and be sure to educate them in order to get them on board.
Approach it with "This is what's best for their musical education".
: I'm struggling this year. I'm sure part of it
: is me. I'm exhausted, it's my 6th year
: (just past average teacher burnout, right?),
: I find myself losing patience often, and I
: feel like I'm working harder this year than
: ever before. But my band is awful. I don't
: know what to do. These were good-to-great
: beginners last year, but this year I can't
: seem to even get started with them. The
: older kids were getting 122 at contest, but
: this year they can't seem to play whole
: I've got 15 rehearsals until my holiday
: concert and there's not a single song we can
: make it through eight measures of. Two of
: the songs are very easy and one is kinda
: tough, but not that bad. It's a lack of
: effort, I think. I know the horns go home
: less this year. I'm torn on what to do. If
: I let them fall on their faces at the
: concert, I don't think it will reflect badly
: on anyone but me and will only jeopardize my
: job and standing with parents. I was
: thinking of maybe requiring pass-offs to
: play the concert. I've done this kind of
: thing for major contests, but never just for
: a semester concert.
: Thoughts? Is a kid in band entitled to a
: concert? Do the few who are actually
: practicing deserve to sound good without the
: rest messing them up? I feel like I'm going
: to lose the talented kids.
