Re: Incentive for Region Students

Very good tips. Thank you so much. This school has a reputation for doing well, but it seems that kids are getting lazier or something. So I'm figuring out what to change or do to motivate the climate on Region. Unfortunately these parents cannot afford private lesson teachers. Thanks again. |
: We're no Coppell, but we do pretty well.
: Here's what works for me:
: -work the music in sectionals and in class
: during the early fall. The biggest focus
: here is on teaching the kids HOW to
: practice. Many of them don't really
: understand how to break the music down into
: smaller chunks, how to effectively use a
: metronome, etc.
: -have regular playing tests/quizzes over the
: music. It starts with just 2 measures, at
: half tempo, and goes up from there. We quiz
: over about the first half of the first etude
: -around the end of September/first of
: October, separate the wheat from the chaff.
: We have sectional work or one-on-one work
: with those who are really working it. For
: those who aren't hacking it, they work on
: their band music, or sometimes I give them
: simple etudes to work on instead.
: -make the all-region trip REALLY fun -
: audition day is fun, for those who make the
: band we do a big group dinner the first
: night, and order pizza at lunch the second
: -make a BIG deal about the kids who make
: region (and an even bigger deal if they go
: farther). We had a perpetual plaque in the
: band hall for all-region qualifiers, until
: we started to have too many for the plaque.
: Now we make a big banner with the name of
: every kid who made it, and hang it in the
: band hall. Every year when we add a new
: banner, we take down the one with kids who
: are no longer here. We get their names on
: the morning announcements when they make it.
: -all-state kids get their picture on the
: wall in the hallway. Only a few now, but I
: think we'll add another 1-2 this year.
: Some of my kids take lessons, usually those
: who actually make region are lesson
: students. Not always.
: It's taken years to build this. Still a work
: in progress.

: What do you all provide for your middle
: students so they stay interested in
: auditioning for region? Do you all give them
: incentives, or what ideas do you have so
: they can keep working hard? Seems like my
: kids are just not responding to practicing
: towards region. Any ideas are appreciated.
: How do some of these top notch schools do it
: (Coppell MS and such)? Are those kids just
: naturally interested in auditioning or what
: do they do up there? LOL
