If you are in a small community without a tradition of successful UIL marching band (I am specifying UIL marching band, because they may have been just doing stand tunes for the crowd, and in their eyes been very successful), run with what you got. It is unlikely you will see 50% of your band before the first day of school. Establish a routine, get the school song, fight song, the national anthem, and some fun stand tunes sounding good. Establish some fundamentals, and gear up for the first day of school. Actually the second week of school, because the first week is usually a wreck - especially if you have a game the first weekend. |
A wise older director that moved around a bit once told me that you treat the first year like you were a guest clinician. Unless it is illegal, unethical, dangerous, or you just can't live with yourself, don't change things. By the spring you can start to make some changes, and the second year they start to become your band.
: that my band camp is 8 hours. Total. Does this
