Some school districts will give you 217 days to justify giving you more money. This is becoming rare, though, as many districts are giving band directors a bigger stipend instead of more contract days. This is because of the question you are asking. A stipend will cover any event or practice that does not fall during your typical work day/week. So the common thing for districts to do now is to give you a 187 day contract plus a big stipend.
If the contract is for 217 days plus a stipend, then the district expects you to work the 217 calendar days (Monday through Friday), and they give you a stipend to cover the weekends or late nights.
