Students can believe that when their goal of achieving a leadership position is attained, they reached their "destination", when actually the journey should be just beginning.
Another question that can be asked during the audition/interview process: What are your plans [i.e., your commitment] for when marching season is over? What do you intend as a student leader to do to contribute to the band program during concert season, and into the late spring leadership selection process for the following year (even if they are seniors).
I had students who never lived up to expectations after the selection process (including drum majors). Also, when marching season was over, they believed they were done...
I don't have the answers, but maybe some can offer suggestions that would help.
