The smaller and lower profile the bell and bow of the cymbal are, typically will mean a darker sound, as well as the hammering. Sabian HHX, HH or Zildjian K or K custom are standards for “darker” sounding cymbals. You could also try the massive 20” Wuhan chinas… depending on the cymbal they can be some real monsters (and dirt cheap for what you get as well). You will not find a dark sounding cymbal that is made from sheet bronze… you will want a cast cymbal. Also keep in mind that no two cast cymbals are alike. You can have two totally different sounds between identical cymbals. The only similarities would be in their characteristics. Call Bill over at Steve Weiss Music. He will definitely help you out!
