If you are not on contract the district is off the hook if something happens to you or your students.
I am sure if anything unfortunate happens, your district will absolve themselves and claim that you were not on contract, therefore they bear no responsibility and will not offer any legal protection for you (besides, you technically are not an employee if you aren't on contract).
Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.
