For background, AD is first year at this school and has been teaching a couple years. I am the HD - first year in position after several years as AD at same school. AD is much older than me and, teaching aside, has a ton of experience in areas I don’t.
Sometimes in class they’re super relaxed with the kids. Lots of laughs and joking. But the next day they’ll be beyond strict, almost confrontational and rude with the kids.
After the latest student-related incident with AD, I talked with our assistant principal, who told me I just need to help him develop his de-escalation skills since they’re new to teaching.
Also, they completely steamroll me and does things for the program without consulting me, especially when it comes to marching band, color guard, or percussion (lots of drum corps exp that I don’t have). We’ve talked about this several times and it gets better for a bit but then goes right back to how it was. It’s like I’m not capable to them.
Anyway, Im very nervous about starting marching band back up. I don’t know how to help AD with their temper (or even bring it up) and I don’t know how to get them to back off and let me do my job as HD. I’m also worried about triggering their temper.
I am a very “can’t we all just get along” person and I do not like confrontation or conflict, but I also do not like that I feel like I’m being shoved out of my job.
🥲 help
